The Imilchil region in the Eastern High Atlas is one of the remotest spots in Morocco. Now more accessible due to new roads it offers one of the best treks in the entire Atlas Mountains.

On this off-beat trip we experience a variety of landscapes from high peaks and arid plateaux to flourishing green valleys. The focal point of our trek is to hike and camp in the dramatic Assif Melloul (White River) Canyon between Imilchil and Anergui.

Day 1 – Arrive Marrakech
Tour starts in Marrakech with an evening visit to the highly animated Djemaa el Fna square, scene of acrobats, musicians and storytellers.

WRT MapDay 2 – Transfer to Imilchil
We spend much of today travelling as we drive north from Marrakech to Beni Mellal then east into one of the remotest spots in the High Atlas. Reaching the Imilchil region we see the beautiful oval-shaped Lake Tislit set in an arid hollow before arriving at our simple lodge.

Day 3 to 6 – Trekking in White River Canyon
We make an early start from Imilchil and spend the day walking through the fertile river valley of Assif Melloul experiencing isolated Berber villages, green fields, fruit trees, mules and a way of life still little touched by the western world. Our first camp is usually in Imghral. On our second day of walking we enter the Assif Melloul (White River) Canyon after Oulghazi and camp at Aghbalou Mouhtti. Next we meander along the canyon and spend our third and fourth nights camping in picturesque spots close to the river before Battli.

Day 7 – Trek to Anergui
On the final day of the trek we head up out of the river valley to Anergui, one of the most beautiful sites in the eastern High Atlas with the green of its fruit and walnut trees. We overnight in a simple gite.

Day 8 – Transfer to Marrakech
From Anergui we enjoy another day travelling by 4×4 through the High Atlas passing the villages of Tillougite and Ouaouizarte, to eventually rejoin the main road that takes us back to Marrakech

Day 9 – Tour ends in Marrakech

Imilchil Marriage Festival

Between September and October Morocco’s very own version of the Romeo and Juliet story is the inspiration for this tribal marriage festival in Imilchil. Up to 40 couples tie the knot while Berber tribes dance and give impromptu musical performances. The legend goes that a man and a woman who were forbidden to marry cried themselves to death, creating the neighbouring lakes of Issly (his) and Tisslit (hers) near Imilchil. So stricken were the families that they established a day – on the anniversary of the lovers’ death – on which members of different tribes could marry each other. The Imilchil Marriage Festival was born.

Please note: the dates of this festival depend on the harvest.
