Ascent of Toubkal

At 4,167m, Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa. The hike to the summit is challenging, but it requires no mountaineering experience and the panoramic view from the top makes the hard work worthwhile.

With the start of the trek just a couple of hours drive from Marrakech, you can reach the summit and back within a week and still have time to explore Morocco’s most captivating city, Marrakech.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive Marrakech
Tour starts in Marrakech with an evening visit to the highly animated Djemaa el Fna square, scene of acrobats, musicians and storytellers.

Day 3 – Trek to Azib Likemt
Today we make a slow ascent to the pass at Tizi Likemt (3,555m) and enjoy our first fine view of the Toubkal Massif. Next a long descent leads to our camp near the village of Azib Likemt (2,200m).

From Tizi ‘n Ououraine (3,120m) we enjoy views of Ifni Dome (3,876m). The trail leads on towards Amsouzert (1,700m), one of the most striking villages in the region, where we stay in a local gite.

Today a steep path leads up a seemingly endless scree slope to reach the pass at Tizi n’Ouanoums (3,664m), a narrow ledge between two shafts of rock. From here it is a long zigzag descent to our camp at Neltner Refuge (3,200m).

We leave before dawn, following a well-worn route to the summit of Toubkal (4,167m). We then descend to base and the villages of Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd, then Imlil. Transfer back to Marrakech.
