The pretty mountain town of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains is a great starting point for a twin centre holiday in northern Morocco. After exploring the picturesque blue painted streets of Chaouen’s hillside medina head for either the Atlantic Coast to soak up the old world charm of the fortified seaside resort of Asilah, or south to the majestic Imperial City of Fez.
Flying into Tangier (or Gibraltar followed by fast ferry to Tangier) you can reach this mountain centre within 2 hours of arrival in Morocco. This pretty whitewashed town is a delightful mountain base. From here you can enjoy walking in the nearby Talassemetane National Park and explore the towns and villages of the area. The UNESCO world heritage medina of Tetouan is only an hour’s drive away.
In Chefchaouen we offer a choice of two cosy and friendly traditional mountain riads (see page 47) for your first base. Dinner is included on your first night and a local guide will help you find your bearings on a guided tour of the medina. During your stay there is plenty of time to wander in the quiet car free lanes of the town, discover local eateries and enjoy the fresh mountain air and spectacular views. Extra nights can be added as you wish.
